Below 75%? How many classes you need to get back
Dropping below 75% feels bad, but it's usually recoverable if you act early. The key is knowing exactly how many classes it'll take, so you can see whether there's enough semester left.
The formula
If you've attended A out of H classes held, the number of classes you must attend in a row to reach 75% is:
Classes needed = (0.75 × H − A) ÷ 0.25, rounded up
Example: you've attended 30 out of 45 (66.7%). 0.75 × 45 = 33.75. Minus 30 = 3.75. Divided by 0.25 = 15 classes. Check: 45 out of 60 = exactly 75%.
Or skip the maths with the attendance calculator.
The rule of four
Dividing by 0.25 is the same as multiplying by 4. So the formula is really saying: work out how many classes short you are (0.75 × H − A), then multiply by four.
In the example, you're 3.75 classes short of 75%, so you need about 15 classes to fix it. Every class you're short costs you four in a row to make up. That's why a few skips feel cheap but take weeks to undo.
At an 80% cut-off it's the rule of five: multiply the shortfall by 5.
How long recovery takes
Classes needed in a row to reach 75%, after 40 classes held:
| Attended (of 40) | Current % | Classes needed |
|---|---|---|
| 29 | 72.5% | 4 |
| 28 | 70% | 8 |
| 26 | 65% | 16 |
| 24 | 60% | 24 |
| 20 | 50% | 40 |
If a subject meets 4 times a week, 16 classes is a month of perfect attendance. 40 classes is 10 weeks, which may be more than what's left of the semester.
A recovery plan that works
- Work it out per subject. Your overall number doesn't tell you which subjects are in trouble. Find the ones below the line and how many classes each needs.
- Count the classes left. Look at your timetable and the semester end date. If a subject needs 16 and only 14 remain, no amount of effort gets you to 75% in that subject. That's when you need to talk to your teacher or department early, not at the end.
- Protect the weakest subject first. If you must miss something, miss a subject that has room, not the one you're recovering.
- Check your number weekly. Recovery is slow, and seeing the number climb helps you stick with it.
- Make sure your attendance is being marked right. During recovery, a single wrong absence costs you four classes of work. If something looks off, raise it quickly.
If it's not recoverable in time
Many colleges have a process for students who fall short for genuine reasons, such as illness. It's different everywhere, so find out what yours is as early as possible. Our guide on what happens below 75% covers the general picture, and medical leave and attendance covers documentation.
