Subject-wise vs overall attendance: which one matters?
"My attendance is 81%, I'm fine." Maybe. It depends on whether your college looks at your overall percentage or checks each subject separately. Many check each subject, and that's where students get caught out.
How a good overall number hides a problem
Your overall percentage is all your attended classes divided by all your held classes. It averages out the subjects. So a subject you never miss can cover up one you keep skipping.
Here's a semester partway through, five subjects:
| Subject | Attended / held | % |
|---|---|---|
| Subject A | 22 / 24 | 91.7% |
| Subject B | 23 / 24 | 95.8% |
| Subject C | 16 / 18 | 88.9% |
| Subject D | 16 / 18 | 88.9% |
| Subject E | 11 / 18 | 61.1% |
| Overall | 88 / 102 | 86.3% |
86% overall looks comfortable. But Subject E is at 61%, and needs 10 classes in a row just to get back to 75%. If your college checks per subject, the overall number was hiding a real problem.
Why it happens to one subject in particular
It's rarely random. Usually it's one of these:
- It's in the first period. Oversleeping, a late bus or a long commute all hit the 9 or 10 o'clock class first.
- It's the last period before a break or the weekend. Leaving early takes out the same subject every time.
- It's the subject you find hardest or least interesting. Skipping it feels like a small decision every time, but they add up.
If you notice a pattern like this, you've found where your skips are going.
Subjects with fewer classes are riskier
A subject that meets 3 times a week builds up fewer classes over the semester than one that meets 4 or 5 times. Each class is a bigger slice of its total, so each absence moves its percentage more.
Missing 2 classes when 20 have been held drops you to 90%. Missing 2 when 40 have been held only drops you to 95%. Same two skips, twice the damage. See the maths of your weekly timetable for how to spot your riskiest subject.
How to keep track of each subject
You need attended and held counts for each subject, not just one total. You can:
- Keep a table in a notebook, one column per subject, a tally for each class held and each one attended.
- Use a spreadsheet with a row per class and a formula per subject.
- Use an app that does it for you. Attendance Tracker shows each subject's percentage and how many classes you can still miss in each, from just marking your periods each day.
Whatever you use, look at the lowest subject, not the overall number. That's the one that decides whether you're safe.
