How many classes can I miss and still keep 75%?
It's the question everyone asks at some point in the semester. Here's how to answer it properly, instead of guessing and hoping.
The formula
If you've attended A classes out of H held, the number of classes you can miss in a row and still be at 75% is:
Classes you can miss = A ÷ 0.75 − H, rounded down
Example: you've attended 40 out of 48. 40 ÷ 0.75 = 53.3, minus 48 = 5.3. Round down: you can miss 5 classes. Check it: after 5 misses you'd be at 40 out of 53 = 75.5%. A sixth miss would put you at 40 out of 54 = 74.1%.
If the answer comes out negative, you're already below 75% and the question becomes how to get back to 75%.

A quick table
Classes you can still miss at 75%, depending on where you are now:
| Held so far | At 80% | At 85% | At 90% | At 100% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 6 |
| 40 | 2 | 5 | 8 | 13 |
| 60 | 4 | 8 | 12 | 20 |
| 80 | 5 | 10 | 16 | 26 |
Two things jump out. Early in the semester you have very little room, even with perfect attendance. And sitting at 80% gives you far less room than it sounds like.
The "every 3 classes earns 1 skip" rule
Here's a handy way to think about it at 75%: every 3 classes you attend gives you 1 class you can afford to miss.
That's because at 75%, 3 out of every 4 classes need to be attended. Attend 3, miss 1, and your percentage stays exactly where it was. It also works in reverse: each class you miss uses up the "credit" from 3 attended ones.
At an 80% cut-off the ratio is 4 to 1: four attended classes per skip.
"In a row" vs "spread out"
The formula tells you how many you can miss if you miss them next, with no classes attended in between. In real life you'll attend some classes between skips, and each of those adds a third of a skip back. So the formula is the cautious answer. If it says you have 3 skips, you have at least 3.
Don't forget it's per subject
If your college checks attendance subject by subject, you need to run this for each subject separately. You might have 6 skips in one subject and 0 in another. A subject with fewer classes per week has less room, because each class is a bigger share of its total. See subject-wise vs overall attendance.
Keep a buffer
The number the formula gives you is the absolute maximum. Use all of it and one fever, one missed bus or one wrongly marked absence puts you under. A sensible plan is to keep 2 or 3 classes in reserve per subject, and only "spend" skips beyond that.
